The reliable order: choose, pin, build, check

  1. Decide which species you want to house and open its Zoopedia entry.
  2. Build the basic habitat perimeter, then use Animals → Pin Species on that habitat to view the chosen species’ collective requirements.
  3. Match the habitat to those requirements, move the animals in, and inspect each animal’s Info Panel for current welfare needs.
  4. Adjust the habitat or animal care based on the warnings and recheck after the population changes.

Frontier’s Planet Zoo 2 guides describe species-specific needs and explain the in-game steps below. Use those current requirements in place of values from an older Planet Zoo guide.

Choose the correct animal home

Planet Zoo 2 uses different housing for different animal types. Larger terrestrial animals live in Habitats made from a barrier perimeter and Staff Gate. Semi-aquatic species may need both land and water. Flying birds need roofed Aviaries with suitable flyable space. Fully aquatic species need Aquariums, while smaller animals use self-contained Exhibits. Shoaling fish are managed as groups rather than as individual animals.

Some species can share a home, but the habitat must meet the needs of every species placed there. For an initial compatibility check, start from the habitat itself: select it, open its Animals tab, choose Pin Species, select the species you intend to include, then use Add to Selection and Confirm Selection. The guide says this view shows their collective requirements. If a planned mix does not appear among suitable animals for that habitat type, do not assume that the species are compatible.

Build a barrier habitat step by step

Frontier defines a Habitat as a Staff Gate and a single continuous loop of Barrier. To create one:

  1. Select the Habitat Barrier tool. For a terrestrial habitat it starts with barrier construction.
  2. Choose barrier settings suitable for the animals, including resistance grade and climb-proofing where needed.
  3. Draw the full perimeter with the Line or Curve tool, allowing for the planned animals’ space requirements.
  4. Add a Staff Gate to complete the basic habitat and connect it to the path network.
  5. Use the Zoopedia and Pin Species requirements to place feeders, nests, enrichment, foliage, scenery, and terrain features.
  6. Transport the animals in and make further adjustments from their welfare feedback.

Space is not always just a flat land-area number. The official guide lists Navigable Land, Water Surface Area, Water Depth, Flyable Area, and Climbable Area as possible parts of a species’ requirements. It also calls out suitable terrain, temperature, plants, water salinity, accessible food and water, enrichment, shelter, and barrier strength. For water bodies, use a Watertight barrier type; the guide also recommends a nearby Water Pump to keep habitat water clean and warns that animals may not reach water on a slope that is too steep.

“Habitat within a habitat”: what the boundary means

The official guide defines one Habitat by a single continuous barrier loop. It does not describe an inner barrier as a way to create a second sub-habitat inside the first. Treat each intended habitat as its own complete loop and gate, and use the game’s habitat identification and Pin Species view to check the result before moving animals in.

You can edit the perimeter later from the habitat Info Panel using Edit Barrier. The official guide says barrier posts can be moved or lowered underground, which allows a barrier to seal off more than one terrain level. That is a way to adapt a loop to uneven or multi-level terrain; it is distinct from a documented nested-habitat mechanic.

Are premade habitats available?

The official Habitats & Exhibits guide explicitly says that the Exhibits browser has available blueprints for placing fully complete Exhibits; you can also build an Exhibit yourself. For larger barrier Habitats, the guide gives a barrier-loop construction process and offers the Pin Species tool to show requirements. It does not promise a species-specific, ready-made barrier Habitat that is already welfare-compliant. Check the available blueprints in your current browser, and always confirm the final enclosure against the target species’ requirements.

Check and maintain welfare

Select an animal in the zoo or from a list to open its Info Panel, which displays its current status and welfare requirements. A habitat’s welfare depends on the needs of the animals housed there, including space, enrichment, shelter, terrain, and temperature. Shelters count only when they are large enough for the animals to fit inside. Keepers also need to clean habitats and restock food.

Recheck welfare over time, even if the habitat was previously suitable. The official Animals guide notes that needs can change as juveniles mature and as a habitat population grows; it also gives guest viewing frequency as an example of a factor that can affect stress. If a need worsens, use the affected animal’s Info Panel to identify what changed before rebuilding the whole enclosure.

If an animal does not appear in Trading

To adopt animals, open the Trading & Storage tab in the Browser. Frontier’s official Animals guide says you need a functional Trade Centre in the current location first. Browse the animals currently available for adoption, check whether the displayed cost is Conservation Credits or funds, select the animal, and choose Adopt. It will go to Animal Storage, from which you can move it into a suitable Habitat.

If the animal you want is not listed, first confirm the Trade Centre is built and that you are viewing Trading & Storage in the intended zoo. Browse the animals currently available for adoption and check for any notice shown by the game. The public guide does not give an exhaustive reason for every absent listing or a guaranteed stock-refresh rule; do not infer that the species is missing from the game from one result.

In Franchise, the official guide also lets you list eligible animals for adoption by other players. That is separate from adopting an animal for your own zoo. For an animal you acquire, check the displayed cost and use Adopt; the official instructions say it goes to Storage before you place it in a suitable Habitat.

Plan and check an animal habitat
  1. 01

    Choose and pin a species

Open its Zoopedia entry and pin it to the habitat.

  2. 02

    Build to its needs

Use the pinned requirements to plan the habitat.

  3. 03

    Review welfare

Check each animal panel and address current warnings.
