Planet Zoo 2 vs Planet Zoo: What Changed?
Do you need to play Planet Zoo first?
No. You can play Planet Zoo 2 without owning the original Planet Zoo; Frontier lists the sequel as a separate game. Your original-game saves, DLC, and animal collection are not confirmed to transfer, so check each game’s library and add-ons separately.
Planet Zoo vs Planet Zoo 2 at a glance
| If you care most about… | Planet Zoo | Planet Zoo 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Core play | Build and manage a zoo, create habitats, care for animals, and play a campaign or Sandbox. | The same broad zoo-building and management focus, with a new sequel feature set. |
| Standout listed features | The original game’s animal care, habitats, research, and zoo management. | Fully aquatic and flying species, customizable aquariums, and expansive Wildlife Reserves are called out by Frontier as new features. |
| Choosing by existing ownership | Keep playing if your current game and purchased content already meet your needs. | Consider the sequel if its aquatic, flying, or Wildlife Reserve features are the reason you want a new zoo game. |
| PC minimums in the Steam listings | 8 GB RAM, 16 GB storage, and GTX 770 / Radeon R9 270X class graphics. | 16 GB RAM, 40 GB storage, and RTX 2060 / RX 5600 XT / Arc A750 class graphics; an SSD is recommended. |
The PC figures are the minimum requirements shown in the Steam listings captured October 15, 2026. They are not a promise of smooth performance at high settings or in a large, crowded zoo. Check the current Steam requirements for your hardware and leave room for the operating system and updates. On the captured listings, Planet Zoo 2 asks for more memory, storage, and graphics capability than the original.
What about animals such as the snow leopard?
The official pages reviewed do not provide one complete, side-by-side animal roster for both games. Planet Zoo 2’s animal guides and store page mention familiar returning species alongside new animals, but that does not establish that every species, behavior, or DLC animal carries over. If you are deciding based on one species, check the current Zoopedia or animal guide inside the specific game and the store list for its editions and add-ons. Do not assume a matching name means identical models, care details, or ownership between games.
Is Planet Zoo 2 better than Zoo Tycoon 2 or Jurassic World Evolution 2?
“Better” depends on the kind of park you want. Jurassic World Evolution 2 is the clearest alternative in the current sources: Frontier describes dinosaurs, park management, a narrative Campaign, and multiple modes. Pick it if a dinosaur park and story-led scenarios matter more to you than building a zoo around living animal species and habitats.
Searches for Zoo Tycoon 2 returned player discussions and comparisons, but this research did not establish a current official store listing or an authoritative feature-by-feature comparison. If you are considering that older game, first confirm that you can still obtain and run the edition you want; the search results alone cannot tell you that it is better or currently supported on your PC.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Planet Zoo 2 if you want the sequel’s aquatic and flying species or Wildlife Reserves, and your PC meets its current minimum requirements.
- Stay with Planet Zoo if you already own it, enjoy its available content, or your PC is below Planet Zoo 2’s listed minimums. You do not need to buy the sequel just to continue playing the original.
- Choose Jurassic World Evolution 2 if your priority is dinosaurs and a campaign-driven park-management game.
- Compare Zoo Tycoon 2 separately if nostalgia or a specific older feature is your reason; verify its current platform and compatibility before deciding.
This comparison uses current official descriptions and store requirements captured on October 15, 2026. It does not rank review quality, compare every DLC roster, establish cross-game transfers, or guarantee future support. See Planet Zoo 2 platforms and stores for current sequel platform details.
