Quick choice

  • Choose Career for guided scenarios and the FEN (Fauna and Ecosystems Network) storyline.
  • Choose Franchise to build within the online network, trade animals, and take part in Community Challenges.
  • Choose Sandbox to focus on open-ended building with more control over simulation settings.

Choose Career for guided scenarios, Franchise for online trading and challenges, or Sandbox for open-ended building. You can start any mode without finishing another.

What each mode is for

Career: a guided adventure

Frontier describes Career as a fun-filled adventure around the world with FEN. Pick it when you want the game to provide a themed direction while you learn the zoo-building and management loop. The public overview establishes the adventure framing, but it does not list the current scenario sequence, objectives, difficulty choices, or completion rewards. Read the objective panel in the scenario you open for those specifics.

Franchise: a connected network

Franchise is the mode Frontier associates with building a global network of zoos and Wildlife Reserves and trading animals with other players. Pick it when those connected features are the point of your save. Treat animal trading as a mode feature to verify through the live game interface: the store overview does not explain market availability, account requirements, or whether a connection interruption changes what you can do. Check the Franchise mode screen and its current notices before committing to a session.

Sandbox: tune the simulation

Frontier describes Sandbox as open-ended creativity and says you can choose the level of simulation and challenge. Pick it when you want to set your own pace and build a zoo or Wildlife Reserve. The public page does not enumerate every starting-funds, animal-availability, challenge, or save option, so review the setup choices before creating the save.

Is Sandbox available immediately?

Frontier lists Sandbox as a current mode and says players can choose the simulation and challenge level. A third-party beginner guide says Sandbox starts with everything unlocked, but Frontier’s public page does not document per-profile prerequisites. Check the mode-selection screen in your current build; if Sandbox is disabled, follow the prerequisite shown there. (Frontier Game Modes, SeniorSlord beginner guide)

Are Wildlife Reserves part of Franchise?

Yes, Franchise includes Wildlife Reserves in its connected network, alongside zoos and player-to-player animal trading. Reserves are not exclusive to Franchise: Frontier also describes Career scenarios that visit reserves and Sandbox saves where you can build one. The public page does not explain detailed reserve workflows, requirements, or economy, so use the in-game Franchise and reserve panels for those rules.

If you are torn between Career and Franchise

Start with the experience you want right now. Choose Career for a guided, globe-spanning adventure; choose Franchise for a connected network and player-to-player animal trading. If you mainly want to experiment with layouts and scenery, Sandbox is the closer fit. Compare the official Game Modes page with the Planet Zoo 2 Steam overview, then confirm the available options in your installed build.
